Chinese Shares Close Higher Friday-Oct 20

Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, boosted by the strong performance of shares related to port transportation and logistics.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went up 0.25 percent, at 3,378.65 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.44 percent higher at 11,238.88 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 362.8 billion yuan (around 54.85 billion U.S. dollars), down from 430 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.94 percent to close at 1,880.21 points.

Shares related to ports and the Shanghai free trade zone led Friday's rise. Shanghai International Port (Group) and Guangzhou Port Company Ltd. both jumped by the daily limit of 10 percent to 7.88 yuan and 7.32 yuan, respectively.

Logistics and transportation companies also performed strongly. CIS International Logistics Corporation Limited, a Shanghai-based logistics firm, surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 10.86 yuan.

Consumption stocks, such as home appliance and liquor makers, lost ground as investors took profits after previous gains.

Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., one of China's largest appliance makers, dipped 2.9 percent to 16.08 yuan, while Anhui Gujing Distillery Company Limited dropped 4.22 percent to 67.33 yuan.
