Chinese Shares Close Higher Monday-Oct 23

Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, lifted by strong performance of shares related to construction and environmental protection projects.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.06 percent to end at 3,380.7 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.6 percent higher at 11,306.31 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 383.7 billion yuan (around 57.96 billion U.S. dollars), up from 362.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.99 percent to close at 1,898.76 points.

Shares related to construction and environmental protection projects led the rise, with Guangdong Liantai Environmental Protection Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 22.25 yuan per share.

Bucking the trend, shares of ports and steel companies fell across the board.

Data on Monday showed China's property market continued to cool as home prices faltered or posted slower growth in major cities amid tough policies to curb speculation.

On a yearly basis, new residential housing prices saw slower growth in 15 major cities in September compared with the same month last year.

Leading real estate developer China Vanke slipped 0.88 percent to end the day at 25.93 yuan per share.
