Chinese Shares Close Lower Monday - April 16

China's major stock indices closed lower Monday, dampened largely by heavyweights in financial and coal mining sectors.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged down 1.53 percent to finish at 3,110.65 points, while the smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.61 percent lower at 10,621.79 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 450.7 billion yuan (71.7 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 396.4 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The Shanghai SE 50 Index, which tracks actively traded industry leaders, posted a decline of 2.26 percent.

Shares in the banking sector led the loss. China Construction Bank saw its share price jump 4.31 percent, while shares of Ping An Bank went down 4.06 percent.

Shares in the coal mining sector also declined, with China Shenhua Energy Company down 3.3 percent to 19.91 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.77 percent to close at 1,838.71 points on Monday.
