Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.99 percent at 3,259.41 points.
The smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.20 percent higher at 10,828.73 points.
Combined turnover on the two bourses declined to 424.87 billion yuan (67.44 billion U.S. dollars) from 461 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
The Shanghai SE 50 Index, which tracks actively traded industry leaders, posted a decline of 1.65 percent.
Unmanned retailers led the gains. Suning.com Co., Ltd rose 0.16 percent to 12.5 yuan. Rainbow Department Store Co., Ltd edged up 2.52 percent at 19.49 yuan.
The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.58 percent to close at 1,753.63 points.
