French shares lost on Tuesday, with the benchmark Paris CAC 40 down 0.70 percent, or 37.17 points, to close at 5,258.58 points.

Of the 40 selected large companies, 30 lost in the day.

French multinational automotive supplier Valeo tumbled 3.38 percent, the top loser of the blue chips. French construction group Vinci was down 2.28 percent and French multinational electric utility company Engie lost 2.22 percent.

Arcelormittal SA, multinational steel manufacturing corporation rose 3.22 percent, the top gainer of the day. French banking giant BNP Paribas gained 1.70 percent. Another banking giant Societe Generale was up 1.54 percent.
