French shares edged up on Friday, with the benchmark Paris CAC 40 up 0.14 percent, or 7.47 points, to close at 5,517.97 points.

A total of 27 of the 40 selected large companies gained in the day.

French car manufacturer Renault advanced 3.93 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. French-Italian multinational electronics and semiconductor manufacturer Stmicroelectronics gained 2.72 percent. French multinational luxury group Kerling rose 2.11 percent.

Paris-based banking company Societe Generale edged down 4.09 percent,the top loser of the blue chips. French multinational insurance firm AXA went down by 2.77 percent, another French banking company Credit Agricole lost 1.40 percent.
