French shares edged up on Wednesday, with the benchmark Paris CAC 40 up 0.29 percent, or 14.85 points, to close at 5,101.41 points.

A total of 23 of the 40 selected large companies gained in the day.

French energy company ENGIE S.A. advanced 3.11 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. French automobile company RENAULT gained 3.00 percent, and French automobile company Peugeot rose 1.78 percent.

European IT services corporation ATOS edged down 1.17 percent, the top loser of the blue chips. French food services and facilities management company SODEXO went down by 0.73 percent, and French multinational advertising and public relations company PUBLICIS GROUPE lost 0.51 percent.
