French shares edged up on Monday, with the benchmark Paris CAC 40 up 0.40 percent, or 20.48 points, to close at 5,165.64 points.

A total of 31 of the 40 selected large companies gained in the day.

Arcelormittal SA, multinational steel manufacturing corporation advanced 2.34 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. French car supplier group Valeo rose 1.79 percent, and French oil and gas firm Technipfmc gained 1.76 percent.

French food services and facilities management company Sodexo went down by 1.06 percent, the top loser of the blue chips. French multinational advertising and public relations company Publicis lost 0.72 percent.

French banking giant Societe Generale edged down 0.48 percent.
