German shares lost on Wednesday, with the benchmark DAX index down 59.78 points, or 0.46 percent, to close at 12,953.41 points.

German energy group E.ON lost the most among the blue chips, down by 2.89 percent, followed by energy group RWE and industrial giant Thyssenkrupp, which lost 2.81 percent and 2.19 percent respectively.

German airlines Lufthansa, multinational building materials company HeidelbergCement and chemical group BASF were the top three winners, rising by 3.19 percent, 0.74 percent and 0.48 percent respectively.

BASF was the most traded share of the day with a turnover of 280.72 million euros (330.82 million U.S. dollars).
