Indian markets closed higher Thursday. Equity benchmarks gained strength amid volatility in the last hour of trade, especially ahead of expiry of September futures and options contracts.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 31,282.48, 122.67 points or 0.39 percent up compared to its previous close at 31,159.81.
