Tokyo stocks edged higher Tuesday morning as initial selling on the back of U.S. shares retreating overnight was overtaken by buying of issues likely to produce solid earnings results.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 36.45 points, or 0.17 percent, from Monday to 21,733.10.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 7.13 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,752.38.
Iron and steel, wholesale and bank-oriented stocks comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
