Tokyo stocks advanced Thursday morning as Wall Street closing at record highs set a positive tone for investors, although gains were capped ahead of the outcomes of policy meetings on the same day at central banks in Japan and Europe.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 71.28 points, or 0.36 percent, from Wednesday to 20,092.14.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 9.39 points, or 0.58 percent, to 1,631.26.
Mining, oil and coal product, and pharmaceutical-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
