Tokyo stocks ended higher in choppy trade as investor sentiment was bolstered by U.S. President Donald Trump proposing a corporate tax cut as part of an economic overhaul to enhance competitiveness.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 96.06 points, or 0.47 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 20,363.11.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 11.74 points, or 0.71 percent, to finish at 1,676.17.
Metal product, textile and apparel, and machinery-related stocks comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
