Tokyo stocks stayed essentially flat Wednesday morning, as investors buying on optimism following a strong showing on Wall Street overnight were offset by those opting to secure recent gains.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 0.58 point, or 0.00 percent, from Tuesday to 20,298.80.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 0.53 point, or 0.03 percent higher, to 1,668.41.
Issues that notably lost ground by the morning break comprised electric power and gas, and pharmaceutical issues.
Those that advanced were led by oil and coal product-linked stocks.
