Tokyo stocks rose Tuesday morning tracking gains on Wall Street overnight, while the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar also added buying support.

As markets opened here, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 257.31 points, or 1.29 percent, from Friday to 20,166.81.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 18.91 points, or 1.15 percent, to 1,657.85.

Insurance, securities and marine transportation-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in early trade.

The U.S. dollar changed hands in the mid-111 yen range in early deals in Tokyo on Tuesday, after rising to an eight-week high in New York overnight.

Markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
