Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday as Wall Street's rise at the end of last week set an upbeat tone, supported by a weaker yen against the U.S. dollar which lifted export-oriented shares.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 41.11 points, or 0.21 percent, from Friday to 20,074.54.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 2.26 points, or 0.14 percent, to 1,614.16.
Oil and coal product, nonferrous metal and machinery-linked stocks comprised those that gained the most in early trade.
