Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as investors snapped up bargains following yesterday's heavy selloff triggered by regional geopolitical concerns.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 87.24 points, or 0.44 percent, from Wednesday to 19,825.95.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 5.68 points, or 0.35 percent, to 1,623.58.

Nonferrous metal, chemical and textile-related issues comprised those that gained the most in the first few minutes after the opening bell.
