Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as an overnight drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average set a negative tone here.
This was compounded by concerns U.S. interests rates won't be hiked as soon as expected and that U.S. President Donald Trump may struggle to fulfill some of his election pledges.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 25.34 points, or 0.13 percent, from Tuesday to 19,974.57.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 3.24 points, or 0.20 percent, to 1,617.24.
Securities, insurance and transportation equipment-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in early trade.
