Tokyo Stocks Open Lower Following Wall Street's Weak Tone, Yen's Rise-July 21

Tokyo stocks opened marginally lower on Friday as a poor showing on Wall Street overnight coupled with the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar made for a dour market mood early on.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 54.73 points, or 0.27 percent, from Thursday to 20,089.86.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 4.48 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,628.53.

Mining, iron and steel, and insurance-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in early trade.
