Tokyo stocks opened marginally lower on Wednesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar weighed on the market and dragged down exporter-linked shares.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 37.70 points, or 0.19 percent, from Tuesday to 19,994.65.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, declined 0.80 point, or 0.05 percent, to 1,608.90.
Mining, land transportation and real estate-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in early trade.
