U.S. online streaming giant Netflix also posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue, boosted by stronger-than-expected subscriber growth. Shares of the company retreated 1.7 percent shortly after the opening bell after rising nearly 2 percent in premarket trading.

Shares of Morgan Stanley increased 1.86 percent as the company's wealth management business posted strong quarterly results.

Meanwhile, traders were digesting the latest comments from the Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen.

Yellen said on Sunday in an international banking seminar that "economic activity in the United States has been growing moderately so far this year, and the labor market has continued to strengthen."
